What You Can Do

Zinc
Zinc deficiency has been linked to prostate enlargement and zinc is known to positively impact prostate and male sexual health. Zinc is also involved in various aspects of androgen metabolism and has been shown to inhibit the activity of 5-alpha reductase. Since zinc is known to reduce the absorption of copper, it is wise to include copper (1-2 mg) with a daily zinc supplementation regime. Prostatrol Forte combines saw palmetto, pygeum, nettles root extract, zinc, copper and selenium in a balanced formula to promote optimal prostate function.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oils)
The average American diet is low in omega-3 fatty acids and high in omega-6 fatty acids, the two main classes of polyunsaturated fatty acids in foods. Recent findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA from fish oil, may prevent prostate cancer. Scientists studied the association between fish consumption and prostate cancer n more than 6000 Swedish men. During the 30 years of follow-up, men who ate no fish had a 2-3 times higher rate of developing prostate cancer than those who ate moderate or high amounts.

A low fat diet supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil may prevent the development and progression of prostate cancer and possibly benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by altering COX-2 expression and prostaglandin production in prostatic tissue. EPA-DHA Complex provides EPA-DHA in an easy to swallow gel cap.

Flax
Flax lignans are phytonutrients that act as powerful antioxidants and phytoestrogens, which can have a balancing effect on hormones. Studies have shown that flaxseed is one of the richest sources of lignans, providing up to 800 times more than any other plant. Lignans may help maintain a healthy prostate by influencing the metabolism of testosterone and estrogen. Research has demonstrated that lignans from flax can contribute to prostate health.

Soy
Soy is known to be a natural source of phytoestrogens, which have been shown to have beneficial effects on estrogen-related conditions. In addition, scientists have now discovered a little-known molecule created in the intestine when soy is digested is a natural and powerful blocker of DHT, which is involved in prostate cancer and BPH. The molecule, called equol, completely stops dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from binding with to the androgen receptor on the prostate thereby preventing the prostate from growing. The novelty of equol is that it both inhibits androgen hormone and influences estrogen hormone action. SpectraSoy contains a full spectrum of soy isoflavones for those that do not want to consume soy products.

Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto has been used for relief of prostate gland swelling since the 1800s. Today, saw palmetto is the most commonly used phytotherapeutic in Europe for managing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). More than 7000 men with BPH have participated in clinical studies evaluating saw palmetto.

Overall, the clinical studies concluded that saw palmetto improves symptoms of BPH, including urinary flow rate, nocturia, painful urination, residual urine, and inflammation. Saw palmetto may produce its effect by lowering levels of DHT in prostate tissue. Animal studies demonstrate that saw palmetto induces apoptosis (programmed cell death), inhibits cell proliferation and prohibits the action of estrogen in the prostate. Saw palmetto is well tolerated, though gastrointestinal disturbance has been reported in rare cases. Prostatrol Forte combines saw palmetto, pygeum, nettles root extract, zinc and selenium in a balanced formula to promote optimal prostate function.

Pygeum
Pygeum africanum bark extract has been used throughout Europe for more than 30 years to improve genital-urinary symptoms. A review completed in 2000 evaluated 18 randomized controlled trials of pygeum that involved 1562 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Compared to placebo-treated men, more men using pygeum reported an improvement in overall symptoms, including nocturia, residual urine volume, and urine flow. Adverse effects due to pygeum were mild and comparable to placebo. Evidence suggests that pygeum produces its preventative and healing effects by inhibiting the division of prostate cancer cells and benign prostatic hyperplasia cells. Prostatrol Forte combines saw palmetto, pygeum, nettles root extract, zinc and selenium in a balanced formula to promote optimal prostate function.

Nettles Root
An extract from the nettle root called Urtica dioica has been used extensively in combination with saw palmetto or by itself to treat BPH. It does so by inhibiting the binding of testosterone-estrogen related protein to its receptor on prostate cell membranes. While urtica is relatively new to Americans, it has been safely and successfully used in Germany for more than a decade. Prostatrol Forte combines saw palmetto, pygeum, nettles root extract, zinc and selenium in a balanced formula to promote optimal prostate function.

Lycopene
Lycopene is a micronutrient in the family of carotenoids, which give fruits and vegetables their yellow, orange, and red colors. Tomatoes are the best natural source of Lycopene, and cooked tomatoes may be the optimal source because the healing action improves the body’s absorption of Lycopene. Extensive scientific evidence demonstrates that increased consumption of tomato products and other Lycopene-containing foods may reduce the occurrence or progression of prostate cancer and BPH.
